Augustus 1672

Knoop schat het totale aantal verdedigers op 4 a 5000 man.

The celebrations of August 28 will be up us again, so some more attention to what happened here in july and august 1672.

From the library I have the book (in fact, part 1 of a series of three books),The martial and Historical Reflections on Willem the Third ' , written by Lt.-Gen. W.J. Knoop.

Knoop can be regarded as one of the 19th century "patriotic" historians, and he has in particular focused on military affairs.
His style is old-fashioned, now and then biased, but he is certainly not stupid and he has good eye for the mistakes that William III made. Knoop is known outside the Netherlands,by his controversy with William Siborne on the role of the Dutch-Belgian troops at Waterloo. That controversy is now being conducted around David Hamilton-Williams and Peter Hofschröer.

And what has Knoop to say on Groningen and 1672?

In June 1672, the combined French, Cologne ( 6 cavalry and 6 regiments infantry, one regiment of 3000 men) and a Munster army of 15 regiments moved further north after the taking of the cities of Grol, Brevoort and Lochem.

Knoop estimated that this was an army from 20,000 to 30,000 men. To Galen, Marhal Luxembourg was added as a 'advisor', but he was arguing too much with van Galen and was replaced by the marquis Renel.
Deventer fell by 'betrayal' on June 21, 1673 and Overste Houttuyn, a Frisian exile, with about 600 man consisting of cavalry and dragoons took Elburg and Harderwijk.
Hattem, attacked by Munster Captain Nagel, was a hard nut to crack and fell after a siege of 4 days in June 22, 1672.

On June 26, 1672, the city of Zwolle surrendered.
The enemy now came awfully close to Friesland and Groningen. Knoop writes that Rabenhaupt then was appointed to Lieutenant-General by Stad en Lande, but he was that already in March 1672 and Rabenhaupt was since 1671 in service. Knoop also states that Rabenhaupt was a German, but he was in fact a Czech. The forces of Rabenhaupt ,Knoop estimates at 1200 man.

On June 29, the enemy approached Coevorden that fell on july 11, 1672.

Where to go next? There was a conference and it held three options: Friesland, Groningen or the port of Delfzijl. After some delibirations it was decided, as evidenced by a memorandum of Furst Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, to attack Groningen. Because there were troops needed for the occupation of towns and fortresses, the army estimates Knoop now was reduced to 13. to 14,000 men.

Attempts to surround the city failed.
The strength of the defending troops is not clear. Estimates range from 1200 to 2000 man regular forces. Renel reports that 'after the arrival of 19 new compagnien from Holland, in Groningen 3000 man of Regular troops were available. Those were 23 or 24 compagnien infantry, 4 compagnien cavalry and 3 compagnies dragoons.

To this can be added the ,ilitia composed of 18 compagnien, plus 4 new compagnien militia and a company of 150 male students. Knoop estimates the total number of defenders 4 to 5000 The stores were well filled and the supply lines were open.

On July 19 Munster Captain Nagel approaches the city with 4000 cavalry man. In the village of Helpen he has a cavalry engagement with cavalry captain Sickinghe. On July 20, the main forces arrives and on July 21 they set up camp between the Schuitendiep and Hoornsche Diep, the Cologne ones the left and on the right the Munster.
On July 22 the enemy tried via a bridge over the Schuitendiep to go to the Damsterdiep to go to Hoogerbrug and Ruischerbrug. These bridges were defended by troops and ‘nobles and peasants’, as Knoop writes.

An attempt to surround the city on the other side also failed. Eight compagnien foot and 2000 horsemen attempted to attack the sconce at Aduarderzijl, but failed as it was now defended by a compagnie of dragoons and armed peasants.

On July 23 the enemy began with theopening of the trenches going to the five southern bastions. The Cologne troops focused on the Oosterpoort and the Munster to the Heerepoort.
On July 23 the defenders started to fire and on that day, the defenders were reinforced by 200 men of the regiment Konigsmarck.

P.S. I made part of this translation with Google, which gave some rather amusing results..

10 opmerkingen:

  1. You mention a Colonel Nagel leading the defense of Hattem. Did he command a particular regiment?

  2. Nope, just as I finished the article, I realised Capt. Nagel was the same one that showed up in Groningen later. Nagel is therefore a Munster commander. I re-edited the text.

    Thanks Dan!

  3. Thanks. On the other hand, do you know of anyway to check to see if there was a Captain or Major Nagel in the Dutch Army of the time? I am coming up empty handed.

  4. Well, there's http://www.milwiki.nl/dutchregiments/ that has most of the officers at the time.

    Is it this person?

Georg Levin von Nagell, IX Münsters kolonel van de infanterie, in Nederlandse dienst, later brigadier.

  5. Unfortunately, no. I have a reference to a Frei Company Nagel in the Dutch army in 1672, but to the best of my knowledge there were no independent companies. I thought that it might be a company in one of the regiments that was on detached duty in one of the outlying fortifications. I will keep trying. Thanks for your efforts.

  7. Thank you all!

Dan, what is the reference? It looks like I am going to some archives soon, so maybe I can help out.

    Harry,

  8. It is a series of plates on the Dutch Army 1672-75 by a Norbert Robitschek.

    BeantwoordenVerwijderen
  9. Dam, AFAIK there were no independent companies in the States' Army. Companies were sometimes broken up, or detached for special duties, like the attack on Coevorden in 1673. It also may be a remnant of a garrison or a company destined for some regiment, but taken over by another one.

Is Robitschek on-line somewhere, or is it from a book?

    BeantwoordenVerwijderen
  10. Robitschek is not on-line or available in a book. In fact they are are series of some 85 rare plates published around 1926. There is some question as to the accuracy of the plates. I am working with Jean Belaubre and Yves Roumegoux trying to establish the accuracy and value of these plates. Eventually, something my be published on them.
